I recently received my first spanking by Facebook for sharing an empowering photo of a plus size woman breastfeeding on my Plus Size Mommy Memoirs page. Over the past few months the media has finally caught wind of the uproar from the birth community about Facebook removing such photos. Huffington Post even had an article addressing this topic last week on their parenting site.
I chose to turn my warning by Facebook into an opportunity to talk about breastfeeding and shared my story in a post and encouraged other moms to join in the discussion. This situation also made me realize my Facebook page isn’t really “mine”. Facebook has the right and ability to kick the Plus Size Mommy Memoirs (PSMM) page out at any time because I’m playing in their playground and I must abide by their rules. So I decided to expand upon my own playground!
For almost a year now the Plus Size Birth website has existed and contains a wealth of resources for women before, during, and after childbirth. Breastfeeding photos aren’t something new to this community because there’s a gallery of 50 stunning photos along with links to support and stories. There are also photo galleries of adorable baby bumps and pictures of glowing mothers moments after giving birth. One of my goals has always been to normalize pregnancy and birth for plus size women and displaying pictures women can identify with helps to accomplish this. Facebook is the number one way people find this website and provides an invaluable forum for a community that has grown to nearly 3,000. While I plan to play nice and follow the Facebook playground rules I’ve decided to expand upon my website and provide people with another play area: The Plus Size Birth Forum!
UPDATE 4/2012 – this format for the forum didn’t work very well so I’m revamping the Plus Size Birth website and giving it a “Baby Center” cell. Stay tuned…
